Trying to pass messages from js into iframes and now I just want to burn all computers ever made
My husband got a new computer game that kept crashing. It turns out that the issue was that it has a system to dynamically drop the resolution and use AI upscaling to compensate when the video card can’t keep up, and this defaults to on. But… if you do in fact have a high-end video card that can keep up, and the AI upscaling never gets called off the bench, the game crashes on a scale of about 15 minutes.
I suspect it’s just endlessly speculatively creating frames that never get used, and then it doesn’t free them because the freeing happens somewhere down the cold path where it’s called to action.
Nnnnot a great bug to slip through QA, and surprising because usually the problem is that game studios do too much testing on high-end machines and not enough on mid and low-end ones. It suggests the upscaling system was slapped on last second because a manager heard it was AI.

Situation: Programming is hard.
Option 1: Appreciate programmers and create a safe and welcoming environment for new ones (especially women, the neurodivergent and neurodivergent women).
Option 2: whatever the fuck is actually happening right now
OH: "with all those new machines it feels like NileRed is starting the Nigel Ignition Facility"
@gsuberland the facility that ignites nigel

Calling for the beheading of King Charles would be Treason I think? This is the only crime where the death penalty still applies in the UK.
The execution would not be live streamed though (unless Reform came to power).
The death penalty hasn't applied for treason in the UK since the late '90s (I remember it because I bet someone that there was no death penalty in the UK a week after the death penalty for treason was revoked).
"I wish AI need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the tokens that are given to us."
Someone I knew from IRL used to have a very popular Twitter account, and she would frequently end her tweets with “This post does not contain a question.”
I think about that a lot, here.
@cstross Reminds me of an online discussion I had with an author a few years back: he wasn't selling well, and complained (in jest... maybe) that he wasn't even on any pirate sites. Not being an author myself, I don't know which would feel worse: having your works pirated, or not read at all.
@OtterSide Not being read at all is worse by a light year. At least if you’re being pirated you’re gaining mind-share among people who might, someday, buy other books of yours.
No, it's all about control and surveillance of people.

Data centers. Cartoon for Dutch newspaper Trouw.
Ok, looks like this is the week of funny experiences.
Customer: "I had an AI check our server and it says the SSH port is open and that's not very secure."
Me: "Yes, you asked us to open it so you could access the server via SFTP (actually, you wanted FTP, but we discussed it a bit and found this compromise). Don't worry, it's only accessible from your IP and you land in a dedicated FreeBSD jail. From there, you can only access the 'exchange' directory on your server, where you can upload and download files without affecting the application."
(NB: I had suggested a VPN, but they declined because it was too complicated.)
Customer: "Yes, but maybe it's still insecure. Can't we close it?"
Me: "No, unless you want to lose access to that directory."
Customer: "Ok, thanks."
One hour later:
Customer: "Hi, I think we've found a solution. We've just created an app (!!!) with AI that lets us access the files anyway, but more securely than SSH (!!!). Can we install that and close SSH? Oh, and not in the dedicated jail, but directly in the application's jail, because it needs access to the application's files."
Me: "Frankly, I trust SSH in a dedicated jail, restricted by the firewall, a lot more. I don't think this is a good idea."
Customer: "Ok, thanks."
Half an hour later:
Customer: "Ok, now it's secure. I had another AI check it and it found some security issues, but it fixed them all. Can you install it and disable SSH?"
Me: "I strongly advise against it. I can see problems coming."
Customer: "Ok, thanks."
One hour later, my phone rings.
Their internal IT guy (who has access to the machine, which, after all, belongs to them) had given the AI the login credentials to go ahead with the operation.
Except the AI had managed to lock itself out via the firewall, without even starting the app. And now they couldn't get back in.
Fortunately, I had my own access, via VPN, to a separate jail that the AI hadn't touched (or even considered).
Customer: "SORRYSORRYSORRYSORRYSORRY! From now on, we do things your way."
Well, at least it ended well.
PS: The customer knows I'm sharing this story and agreed to it.
Citing concerns about misinformation and hate, @ScottishGreens have (Finally!) made the decision to leave X for good.
They cited Mastodon as one of the 8 platforms they can still be found on but I hope this can result in more engagement on the fediverse. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/scottish-greens-quit-x-over-125527731.html #scotpol #scotland #uk #ukpol #politics #greens
Brendan Larsen from Ngāmotu in Aotearoa and a member of the New Plymouth Astronomical Society took this stack over a couple of hours and estimates 14000 satellite trails. This is how bad it is now, it's set to get much much much worse - and then we lose Low Earth Orbit until the mess cleans itself up, if it cleans itself up. No weather satellites for forecasting, no GPS, and definitely no crewed spaceflight. All because of ego and greed. It must be stopped.
@stefano Seems fair, your paying clients should come first! But we love the stories you can share.
